… And we’re back with part two of Zack Snyder’s Netflix space opera Rebel Moon -Part Two: The Scargiver. John Boorman’s 1981 medieval classic “Excalibur,” which is an adaptation of Sir Thomas Malory’s 15th-century work “Le Morte d’Arthur” and tells the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, is one of Zack Snyder’s favorite movies.

The title of this movie was also put by Snyder on the marquee of the cinema where Bruce Wayne and his parents leave as children before that crucial scene in Crime Alley in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
Immediately following my first satisfying viewing of “Rebel Moon -Part Two: The Scargiver,” I was reminded of a scenario from the conclusion of “Excalibur.” The legendary Nigel Terry takes a sip from the holy grail that his quest knight, Perceval, offers to the exhausted King Arthur. Feeling instantly rejuvenated and energized, he proclaims,I didn’t know how empty was my soul, until it was filled.” The irony that Snyder’s passion project—which started out as a botched “Star Wars” pitch—became a symbol of what fans had been waiting for in the “Star Wars” universe struck me like a strike from a magical sword.
“Rebel Moon -Part Two: The Scargiver” is based on a script written by Shay Hatten, Kurt Johnstad, and Zack Snyder and takes place sometime after the Battle of Gondival. It continues with “the epic saga of Kora and the surviving warriors as they prepare to sacrifice everything, fighting alongside the brave people of Veldt, to defend a once peaceful village, a newfound homeland for those who have lost their own in the fight against the Motherworld,” according to the official synopsis.
“The warriors must confront the realities of their own pasts on the eve of battle, as each one reveals the motivation behind their fighting. Legends are created, heroes rise to prominence, and unbreakable ties are formed as the whole weight of the Realm bears down on the growing revolt.”
Sure, at first glance, the idea seems straightforward enough, originating from a verisimilitude of plots that have been repeated over the years in TV, movies, and books. The most obvious inspiration is director Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai,” which features brave warriors brought in to defend a small village. However, “Rebel Moon” also has strong roots in the tradition of classic Hollywood westerns, in which settlers defend their cattle, crops, and cool water sources from rapacious invaders.
To discount “Rebel Moon” as merely another “Star Wars” parody of well-known “Hero’s Journey” material, however, would be to overlook the masterful execution and impressive technical skills seen in “Part Two: The Scargiver.” Examining Snyder’s magician’s hat in further detail reveals a plethora of filmmaking techniques and imaginative prestidigitation that may make even the most cynical reviewers smile with Rebel Moon -Part Two: The Scargiver.
Particularly Michiel Huisman’s Gunnar and Sofia Boutella’s Kora, both of whom provide passionate performances. Admiral Noble, the cunning Imperium enforcer, is portrayed by Ed Skrein as a multifaceted character that chews through the scenery. The build-up to the clash eventually calms down to reveal some touching moments and surprising emotion. We also get to see a lot more of Jimmy, the gaunt combat robot, who is voiced poignantly by Sir Anthony Hopkins.
The film features strong moments with Doona Bae’s Nemesis, Star Nair’s Tarak, and Djimon Hounsou’s General Titus. Backstories are developed just enough to prevent boredom, and then we are thrown into a never-ending succession of exquisitely orchestrated battlezone sequences that delight the senses.
It’s unfair to compare one part of “Rebel Moon” to the other because the two sections were shot simultaneously, but because Snyder persuaded Netflix to permit it, that’s what we have to discuss. I must admit that when I wrote my first evaluation of “Part One: A Child of Fire” back in December, I was a little too harsh on it; I had not anticipated its icy, violent tone. Maybe it was all the Christmas spirit, eggnog, and jingle bells that took my attention when it first came a few days before Christmas, but when I saw it again recently, just before “Part Two,” I was struck by the nuanced color nuances, the way light played with shadow, the excellent shot framing, and the jaw-dropping soundtrack by Tom Holkenborg.
I won’t bore readers with a scene-by-scene description of “The Scargiver,” but I can share some broad thoughts about the visual extravaganza, with compositional homages to the science fiction fantasy magazine “Heavy Metal,” illustrators Boris Vallejo and Frank Frazetta, and other artists. While many contemporary genre films use real people behind the scenes of Rebel Moon -Part Two: The Scargiver , very few have the same level of bravery and technical skill as the lively heart of Snyder’s sequel. At his most creative, uninhibited, and driven by a clear desire to delight audiences with a classic tale of good vs evil in a distant galaxy, Snyder is at the pinnacle of his craft.
Take a freeze-frame at any point during the Battle of Veldt in Rebel Moon -Part Two: The Scargiver, which takes up almost the whole last hour, and you could find yourself transported to a pop-up museum of Old Masters paintings in between the balletic orgy of full-throttle sci-fi battle. Sort through currents of bitter smoke and dwell on a coherent light beam bouncing off a stream’s surface. Watch as scorching blades strike, sending splatters of molten orange slag glittering. Black smoke and heat waves shoot out of armored attack ships. Jimmy had a moment of epiphany when creeping spider tanks erupted in blooms of cleansing red fire, intercut with cinema verite-style tracking shots in the trenches!
It’s all very heavy stuff, and it’s amazing to see Snyder go full crazy in his environment and operate like a maniac. While it may not be flawless, “Rebel Moon -Part Two: The Scargiver” offers a large box of Cracker Jacks that comes with an abundance of additional peanuts!
